There are hundreds of miles of trails suitable for exploring on an all-terrain vehicle. Use one of the tour companies in the area or haul your own ATV to the trails using other transport.
Where to Go 4X4/ATVing:
Backwood-Cottonwood Road
- 46 miles one way from Kodachrome Basin State Park to Hwy 89
- Dirt and clay surface road
- Flash flooding frequently washes out parts of this route
- Road follows scenic Cockscomb monocline and offers access to Grosvenor Arch
Backway Hole-in-the-Rock Road
- 57 miles one-way off Hwy 191
- Dirt road (note rough and rocky 6 mile section before Hole-in-the-Rock overlook)
- Four-wheel drive vehicles required
- Prone to washouts and flash flooding
- Gives access to Devils Garden
Backway Johnson Canyon/Skutumpah Road
- 34 miles (Starts on Hwy 89 to #501 and #500 junction)
- Dirt road
- Heads northeast to Cannonville through cliffs that make up Grand Staircase
- Subject to flooding and washouts
Backway Burr Trail
- 31 mile dirt road from Capitol Reef National Park boundary
- Paved road for the first 31 miles traveling east from Boulder
- Panoramic views and sandstone cliffs
- Access to Deer Creek campground.
