Escalante offers the vacationer a real adventure. In fact, there is something for everyone here in southern Utah. Utah Heritage Highway 89 will be your stable point, and you will begin the trip of a lifetime through the wilderness Mother Nature laid out to enthrall the traveler.
Escalante is a great place to take scenic drives through the ridges and canyons of this beautiful land. As you wind through pine and spruce forests, you will see some incredible views.
Take highway 12, along what is known as Hell's Backbone, and see huge drops on either side of the road and cross a narrow bridge. Take Smokey Mountain Road, climbing switchbacks up and up Smokey Mountain. Get wondrous views of Lake Powell.
Of course, get your fill of boating and fishing. Hike along Lower Calf Creek Falls on an easy half-day hike on a well-maintained trail. Hike along Escalante River and explore the river gorge. For overnighters, there are also some adventurous trails, like Coyote Gulch or Neon Canyon with its Golden Cathedral.
Unspoiled beauty will invite you to discover the streams flowing in the canyons, whether on horseback or on an ATV. There is something for the whole family here.
